For those of you closely following The Ferrule, you will know we have been taking advantage of rainy days to pressure wash and clean upcoming projects.
This particular entry covers a recent deck job that exceeded our expectations. After cleaning the deck, checking for proper moisture content, sanding and a final sweep we were ready for a coat of exterior varnish.
We did two coats on this deck within 48 hours. It’s referred to as a “wet on wet” application and promotes proper adhesion between coating layers and the second coat provides a more uniform finish.
This is the first time we have used this particular product from Flood . This product went on more like a latex polyurethane and levelled like an oil. It also helped provide a more uniform tone for all the boards. To say we are happy with the results is an understatement.

We will discuss the value of pressure washing in another post but for this new deck we wanted to clean and open the fibres. Pressure from planing can produce something called mill glaze. It creates a tough surface that is difficult for stain, primer or paint to bond.

Leaves and what not swept off the surface before we apply the first of two coats of stain.
